About Benbulben National Heritage Area

Benbulben National Heritage Area centers around the striking Benbulben mountain, the largest and most famous table mountain in Ireland, located in County Sligo in the northwest. Geologically formed during the Ice Age, Benbulben’s unique flat-topped silhouette dominates the landscape and is part of the Dartry Mountains, stretching across approximately 15 kilometers. The heritage area encompasses a mix of scenic mountains, limestone pavements, boglands, and rich cultural sites, including ancient megalithic tombs and traditional Irish villages. Ecologically, the area supports diverse flora and fauna, including rare alpine plants, peregrine falcons, and red squirrels. Visitors are drawn to the region for its world-class hiking opportunities on well-marked trails that ascend the slopes and ridges, featuring panoramic views over the Atlantic coast and the vast Drumcliffe Bay. The heritage area also celebrates the legacy of Irish literary figure W.B. Yeats, who immortalized Benbulben in his poetry, making the area culturally significant. Besides hiking, activities include rock climbing, birdwatching, and exploring archaeological sites like the megalithic tombs at Carrowmore. The area's rugged natural beauty combined with rich folklore and historical associations make Benbulben National Heritage Area a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and cultural tourists alike.
